Scope and Content Note

Papers of a former director of the United Artists Foreign Publicity Office, chiefly consisting of press releases for foreign consumption. The content of the releases, however, largely concerns domestic corporate matters. Included is Around the World (1932-1948), the official voice of the United Artists Foreign Department, an internal newsletter; Behind the Screen in Hollywood (1937-1944), which was intended for foreign newspaper editors; and Foreign News Stories (1934-1943).

Around the World contains news of United Artists management and productions intended for the foreign sales offices. This newsletter is extensively illustrated, documenting activities of UA at home and abroad as well the local publicity programs and exploitations developed for particular productions. These newsletters are chronologically arranged. After December 1943 Spanish and French language versions are included.

Behind the Screen in Hollywood, which contains information about United Artists stars and productions, was issued twice a month for the exclusive use of one newspaper in a particular city. The press releases were issued with photographs. These photographs are not included here, although caption information is.

The purpose of the Foreign News Stories is uncertain. Here the releases are arranged by United Artists executive or production company name, with all names listed in the contents list. The fourth section consists of longer, special feature stories. Many of these stories are followed by foreign language translations. The titles of these special stories are listed in the contents list. Also included is a file of correspondence and memoranda, mainly 1946-1951.
