Abstract:

Records documenting the international distribution of Eagle-Lion films between 1947 and 1951. Contains agreements, contracts, legal correspondence, and related financial data. The correspondence is detailed and routine. Although only a short time period is covered, the documentation of Eagle-Lion's worldwide distribution appears comprehensive. Among the executives who are extensively documented in the department files are Andy Albeck, Samuel L. Seidelman, and Joseph C. Goltz.

The series is arranged into three categories – Nation Files, Subject Files, and Reports. The final series, Reports, consists of weekly reports of Eagle-Lion films (for Latin America only) for 1951, giving first run theatre grosses as well as monthly reports submitted by Eagle-Lion foreign distributors. These monthly reports submitted by the various distributors, including J. Arthur Rank and Gamma, vary in character but they generally include a summary of income, distribution share, and expenses for each film. For some countries the distribution is broken down by individual theatre or location. Although these reports, which are arranged alphabetically by country, generally cover only the year 1951, they provide a good snapshot of the status of Eagle-Lion's overseas financial operations.

Processing Information

The records in this series were extracted from accession M95-233 which was comprised of unprocessed and partially processed files. The files were received in 1969 and some work was done on them prior to box and folder lists being prepared and call numbers assigned in 1994-1995.

These files were originally received from United Artists labeled as the files of Andy Albeck, an employee of Eagle-Lion, who became legal counsel for the United Artists Foreign Department after the Eagle-Lion sale. At the Historical Society, these files were first sorted into individual series although the basis for that arrangement was not apparent when processing work was resumed in 1994. As a result, those "Albeck" files which appeared to originate in the Eagle-Lion International Department were recombined so that the documentation would provide more comprehensive and useful access to Eagle-Lion operations in particular countries although the functions and responsibilities of specific Eagle-Lion executives might be blurred as a result.
