Biography/History

Loyd Wright was a well known Los Angeles attorney who represented United Artists and who served as secretary of the board of trustees of the corporation. He was born in San Jacinto, served in World War I, and graduated from the University of Southern California Law School in 1915. Wright was also active in Republican politics serving as an active member of the Republican State Central Committee for many years. In 1937 he was president of the Los Angeles Bar Association, in 1940 he headed the State Bar, and in 1954 he was elected president of the American Bar Association. Wright died at age 81 on October 22, 1974.

Scope and Content Note

The Loyd Wright files were received by WCFTR in 1976 and arranged and described many years after the other United Artists legal files (1A-4A) were prepared for research. As a result, no comparison of the responsibilities of the Wright and O'Brien offices or the content of the records they created can be offered here.

Wright's involvement with United Artists (and the records he created) focused in the areas of anti-trust, contract negotiation, and distribution agreements with independent producers. He was, as well, secretary to the board of trustees, and as a result regularly involved with the partners and corporate officers concerning matters discussed at board and stockholders meetings.

As a part of these duties Wright received a variety of corporate reports (primarily from the treasurer and from the foreign office) that appear not to have been received by the Archives with the records of their generating offices. During the 1930s Wright also received numerous mimeographed circulars from the Legal and Foreign offices of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association. Except for the UA Contract Summaries and the Cabled Foreign Reports, which were bulky and separately catalogued as United Artists Series 9C and 10C, these valuable and apparently unique UA and MPPDA reports have been retained as part of the Wright legal files because they are not readily available elsewhere.

Wright also represented Charlie Chaplin and D.W. Griffith and he was Mary Pickford's attorney during her divorce from Douglas Fairbanks. However, no records of his personal representation of the United Artists partners are included in these papers. Of the legal work that Wright did for other motion picture personalities (including Mae West and Hall Wallis) there is only one file in the collection. This relates to the financial problems of Charles Laughton.

The Wright Legal Files as arranged in four series: Correspondence, Legal Documents, Litigation, and Financial Records.

The CORRESPONDENCE, which primarily documents the period from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s, is divided into a general section, which is chronologically-arranged, and an alphabetical file. The early general correspondence primarily relates to distribution and revision of the minutes of the board of trustees, although the later correspondence is less focused in content, and there is some overlap with the correspondence in the LEGAL DOCUMENTS and LITIGATION portions of the collection.

Of special note within the alphabetical section of the CORRESPONDENCE are the annual reports of the anti-trust activities of Wright's firm in behalf of UA, the monthly narrative reports prepared by United Artists overseas managers (only covering the period 1935 to 1938, however), annual financial reports of the “Silverstone Distribution Plan,” and the mimeographed mailings of the foreign and legal offices of the MPPDA. There is also a file on the articles of incorporation and by-laws which includes 1919 correspondence and incorporation papers of Arthur Wright and drafts of columns that Loyd Wright prepared for the USC alumni magazine.

The LEGAL DOCUMENTS includes correspondence and draft and final copies of legal documents relating to a host of legal actions to which United Artists was a party, such as distribution agreements and employment contracts. This section is arranged alphabetically by individual, production company name, or by motion picture title. The LITIGATION files are similar to the previous section except that they relate to court actions which involved United Artists. This material is arranged alphabetically by plaintiff.

The alphabetically-arranged FINANCIAL RECORDS consist of reports such as foreign and domestic operating statements, expenses, and bank balances that were circulated to Wright for informational purposes.
