Abstract:

The Crawford Young papers document the scholarly and professional activities of Merwin Crawford Young, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Young was first made a full professor in 1963 and became the director of the African Studies program. Young's work centered around democracy and state formation in post-colonial Africa. His 1976 work: "The Politics of Cultural Pluralism" was awarded several academic prizes and remains influential in the field. Young retired in 2001.

The Crawford Young papers have maintained a good deal of original order within the two separate accessions which make up the collection. The papers transferred to UW-Archives make up boxes 1-4 of the collection and well as box 8 which contains items separated on account of their size. These papers primarily concern professor Young's teaching, research, and professional activities, as well as his professional correspondence. Boxes 5 - 7 of the collection represent those papers donated by Young's family in 2020. These papers concern Young's publications and his work refereeing other published work in his field as well as expanding his personal correspondence. This section of the collection (boxes 6 and 7) contain his research notes for three projects to which he assigned nicknames (Africa, CP, and State).

Merwin Crawford Young, born 1931 in Philadelphia PA, was a professor of political science and African studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1963 until 2004. His scholarly work focused on the development of democracy and statehood in post-colonial Africa and the role played by cultural pluralism in the formation of political culture.

Young completed his BA at the University of Michigan in 1953 and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1963. He began teaching at University of Wisconsin-Madison that same year. Young served two terms as director of the African Studies Program and twice served as the chair of the Department of Political Science. From 1992-1993 he served as acting dean of the College of Letters and Science.

Young produced numerous books and articles analyzing the political environment of post-colonial Africa, including "The Politics of Cultural Pluralism" in 1976, "The African Colonial State in Comparative Perspective" in 1994, and "The Postcolonial State in Africa" in 2012.

Young's many graduate students went on to occupy academic and diplomatic positions in the United States and across the continent of Africa and he held visiting professorships at Makerere University in Kampala and National University of Zaire in Lubumbashi.

Young retired in 2004 but remained active as professor emeritus and continued to contribute heavily to research in his field for a decade after his retirement. He passed away in January of 2020.

The Crawford Young papers contain materials primarily from professor Young's work in the in the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They include files related to the Department of Political Science, the African Studies program and other university and campus committees, as well as correspondence, research notes, course files, and other research materials.

In addition there are files related to professor Young's participation in various honorary organizations including Fulbright, the African Studies Association, the American Political Science Association, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Library of Congress Scholars Council.

Professor Young's research activities are documented by files on many of his publications, full research notes created for at least three of his longer projects, referee reviews, and file on research projects undertaken for a variety of foundations and research centers including the Rockefeller Foundation, the Wilson Center, the Ford Foundation, and the Institute for Advanced Studies.

Professor Young's correspondence is largely sorted by originating country of correspondent, however his correspondence with graduate students is separated from that of his other professional contacts and sorted alphabetically by name.

The collection also contains syllabi and exam questions for a number of professor Young's courses.
