Robert H. Dott Jr. began his career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958 as an assistant professor in the Department of Geology. His pioneering research in sedimentary geology and well-attended lectures and field trips, along with many scholarly articles and a widely used and highly acclaimed textbook titled Evolution of the Earth (8th ed., 2010), combine to make him one of Wisconsin's foremost historians of geologic thought. This collection includes course materials, articles and papers, research notes, correspondence, and photos from the course of his career with the University.

Biographical sketch

Beginning his career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1958 as an assistant professor in the Department of Geology, Robert H. Dott, Jr. is today recognized as a humanitarian, a champion of the geological sciences, and faithful mentor to over three generations of students. His pioneering research in sedimentary geology and well-attended lectures and field trips, along with many scholarly articles and a widely used and highly acclaimed textbook titled Evolution of the Earth (8th ed., 2010), combine to make him one of Wisconsin's foremost historians of geologic thought. Professor Bob Dott received the 2011 Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal, the highest award of the American Geological Institute.

Scope and content

This collection contains: History of Geological Thought course materials; Sandstone petrology files and lecture notes; papers, publications on Charles Lyell; committee and professional files; History of Geology papers; professional correspondence; legal opinions and correspondence on land use for the Badger Ammunition plant and development in Wisconsin Dells; field trip notes; articles (including some unpublished by others than Dott) on St. Peter sandstone; articles and correspondence on the Ediacaran geological time period; photos, notes, correspondence, and articles on Cambrian fossils; USGS quadrangle maps with some (minimal) notation; and publications on Cambrian geology.
