The Emil Truog papers document the
activities of Professor Emil Truog at the Soil Science Department of the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. Truog was on the faculty at Wisconsin from 1921 to 1954 and made lasting
contributions to the fields of soil science, agronomy, and chemistry. His papers include
personal, administrative and scientific correspondence, manuscripts, photographs and

Biographical / Historical
Emil Truog was a professor of soil science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1921
until being named emeritus in 1954. Truog was born near Independence, Wisconsin in 1884 and
graduated in a class of nine men from Arcadia High School near Independence and received a
bachelors in agriculture and a masters in chemistry at UW-Madison. He contributed a number
of novel methods for testing soil content for acidity, nutrients, and minerals, and
developed agricultural practices around alfalfa and corn in Wisconsin. He was associated
with a number of national and international scholarly organizations including the American
Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America, the Soil Conservation Society, the
International Soil Science Congress, and the American Chemical Society.

Scope and Contents
This collection contains the personal and professional papers of Professor Emil Truog which
document his work for the Soil Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Truog was involved with a number of professional and scientific organizations as well as
having relationships with industrial concerns in the areas of his study. His papers contain
correspondence documents from his field work, manuscripts, publications, photographs,
scrapbooks, and speeches. The correspondence in this collection documents Truog's work as a
teacher, administrator, and researcher as well as his relationships to various scholarly and
scientific organizations. His scrapbooks document his life and activities in Madison as well
as those of his students.
