Abstract:
Kathryn Frederick Clarenbach (October 7, 1920 – March 4, 1994) was an educator and feminist activist who led the University of Wisconsin's program of Continuing Education for Women and cofounded the groundbreaking women's rights organization the National Organization for Women (NOW). She served as chair of the Wisconsin Governor's Commission on the Status of Women from 1964-1969 and 1970-1979, president of the National Association of Commissions on Women from 1970-1972, as chair of NOW's board from 1966-1970, and as Executive Director of the U.S. Commission for the Observance of International Women's Year and as Deputy Coordinator of the National Women's Conference in Houston in 1977. The collection includes internal and external organizational records for the National Organization of Women, the Wisconsin Governor's Commission on the Status of Women, the Interstate Association of Commissions on the Status of Women, the National Commission on the Observance of International Women's Year, the University of Wisconsin Women's Education Resources Program, the Wisconsin Women's Council, the Citizen's Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the National Commission on Working Women, the Wisconsin Women's Network, and the Association of Faculty Women at the University of Wisconsin. These records contain meeting minutes, agendas, publications, correspondence, conference proceedings, correspondence, legislation, speech transcripts, photographs, and recorded speeches. The collection also includes Clarenbach's personal correspondence, calendars, speech transcripts, and recordings of her appearances at conferences and on radio programs.
