Abstract:
The Marvin Sukov papers are primarily correspondence between Sukov and little magazine presses and editors, typically about developing his personal collection. Sukov collected little magazines for decades, amassing a huge collection that was then acquired by UW-Madison in 1959. The initial gift totalled over 10,000 items including entire runs, rare and hard to find publications, and early issues. This collection includes correspondence with dozens of little magazines looking for specific issues, some correspondence with UW-Madison about it's intial acquistion of the collection, and correspondence with publishers, booksellers, and private collectors. This collection also includes dozens of photographs of libraries that Sukov donated in 1975, which were originally displayed in Room 364 in Memorial Library.

Biography/History

Dr. Marvin Sukov (1904-1984) was a Minneapolis criminal psychiatrist and avid collector of Little Magazines. He began collecting little magazines, which are typically non-commerical and often avant-garde literary works of fiction and of poetry. In 1958, Sukov began corresponding with the UW-Madison Libraries, specifically the Director of Libraries, Louis Kaplan, and the Curator of Rare Books, Felix Pollak. It was decided that UW-Madison would acquire a majority Sukov's collection of little magazines, totalling to over 10,000 items across over 700 titles. Sukov donated and sold further issues to the library to fill in gaps in the collection throughout the 60s and 70s, with another significant donation of 650 items in 1965. Sukov stayed involved with UW-Madison Libraries until his death in 1984.

Scope and Content Note

The Sukov papers consists of correspondence about the creation and management of Sukov's personal collection of little magazines. There is some correspondence with booksellers, publishers, and other private collectors to obtain specific issues for his collection. There is a small amount of newspaper clippings and articles, some of which were written by Felix Pollak, the curator of UW-Madison at the time, who helped organize the acquisiton of Sukov's little magazines. The collection also includes dozens of photographs of famous libraries that was donated by Sukov in 1975. The images were orginally on display in Memorial Library in Room 364. They have been de-framed and placed into boxes.
