Biography/History

The Moscow Sun Yat-sen University was a Communist International (Comintern) school located in Moscow, Russia. The school was opened in 1925 only to close five years later in 1930. Officially the Sun Yat-sen Communist University of the Toilers of China, the school was additionally known as the Communist Worker's University of China (KUTK). It operated as a training camp for Chinese revolutionaries from the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

In 1923, Sun Yat-sen, the founder of KMT, esablished an alliance with the CCP, although it was tenuous from the beginning. This alliance, known as the First United Front, was meant to end warlordism in China, however both parties had their own goals they wanted to achieve. In cooperation with the Soviet Union, the alliance established the Moscow Sun Yat-Sen University by splitting the Chinese department from the existing Communist University of the Toilers of the East (KUTV, also known as the Far East University). The new university was named after Sun Yat-sen as a sign of respect to his contributions to the Chinese revolution.

The school officially began classes on November 7, 1925, on the eighth anniversary of the October Revolution. Students were enrolled for 2-year course, focusing on Marxism and Leninism, as well as mobilization, propaganda, and military instruction.

In 1927, the alliance between the KMT and CCP broke, causing students from the KMT to return to China. The university continued for a few more years before closing in 1930.

Scope and Content Note

The majority of this collection are materials that were published by the Moscow Sun Yat-Sen University. The university published materials that were then used during the normal course of study, such as readings and assignments. The "Collection of Assignments" cover both the first-year course and the second-year course. An additional set of assignments focused on party building are also included in this collection, with the relevant materials for those assignments. Other materials that were published by the university include a number of issues of the university's bulletin, 'Bulletin of the China Research Institute of the Communist Workers' University of China' and a publication, 'International Review'. Further items in the collection consist of a number of publications about communism and/or China.

Included in this this collection are a handful of journal articles about Marxism in China that are from after the closure of the university. They date from 1977 to 1993.

The materials in the collection are in Chinese, although most include a Russian translation of the title as well. Most are photocopies, although a few could be originals.
