Biography/History

Sisters Marcella Archer (later Mrs. Henry Crewe), Tryphenia Margaret Archer, and Lavinia Archer were daughters of the Rev. William John Bellew Archer. They grew up in Worms, Germany, where he had a congregation for some years. Later he was the incumbent of Churchill, somersetshire. As "Mercellina" Miss Archer also wrote at least one original three-decker, "Ireland's Ture Daughter. A Novel" in 1881. This novel was dedicated to Gladstone (Wolff 7654). BLC and Wolff treat "marcellina" as anonymous and BLC lists only two tracts for Mrs. Henry Crewe. Tryphenia Archer married Canon J. D. H. Browne and lived in Santa Monica, California. Her husband founded "The Los Angeles Churchman." Lavinia Archar married the Rev. F. J. H. Axford and moved to Nova Scotia.

Scope and Content Note

The Archer Family papers contain an autographed letter signed from W. E. Gladstone to Miss Archer commenting favourably on her stranslation as "Marvellina," of "Love Blinded" (1879) by Salvatore Farina: together with an autographed card authoriszing her to quote him, and an advertisement for "Love Blinded," printing an exact from Gladstone's letter. This , along with 36 press cuttings from newspapers adn magazines that printed her later work, as Mrs. Henry Crewe (1880s-1890s). A manuscript of 5 essays by her husdband Henry Crewe, who wrote as "Budge" are also present in the collection.

Six brief autographs and four printed poems by Tryphenia Archer are included in the collection in addition to a copy of "Household Words," which contains an installment of her anonymous story, "Chiquita. A tale of Southern California," and the final page of an excited letter announcing its acceptance by Charles Dickens (the younger); and with the autograph manuscript of her sketch "The Sandwich Man" (15 paged, undated).

A small "album amicorum" kept by Lavinia Archer in Germany in the 1840s through 1850s which includes an autograph poem by D. F. Strauss is also included in this collection. There are a few papers in William John Bellew's hand, along with a few family letters, unsorted cuttings, poems, ect. Much of the contents are photocopies of originals but not all originals are present in the collection.
