Biography/History
George P. Connolly was born and attended public schools in Chicago, Illinois. As a
Kenoshan he became the Executive Vice President of Brown National Bank, a President of the
Kenosha Chamber of Commerce, and a member of many Kenosha Community Agency Boards.
His efforts to bring UW-Parkside to the Kenosha/Racine area earned him the Kenosha
Merit Award. Awarded by the Kenosha Rotary Club, the Kenosha Merit Award is
presented to Kenoshans for their outstanding “service above self.” The George P.
Connolly Papers reflect the diligent efforts of George Connolly and the Kenoshans
for Parkside Committee in bringing UW-Parkside to Kenosha County.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists mainly of correspondence and research regarding site
selection. Site Selection Files, Miscellaneous Files, and Southeastern Citizens
Alliance follow the process and also bring into play the conflict that evolved as
citizens of Kenosha became displaced by the final selection. Another feature of the
collection is the comparison of UW-Parkside and UW-Green Bay which was also being
built at this time. Fundraising efforts found in the Miscellaneous Files and
Committee Files provide lists of names of prominent Kenosha citizens of that time.
Arrangement of the Materials
The files are organized alphabetically by personal name, name of office, or by
subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including
correspondence, staff memos, and reports. Throughout the files, there are cross
references between names of individuals, organizations, and topics. The "SEE ALSO"
reference refers to related folders elsewhere in the collection. The "SEE" reference
provides the proper folder heading to examine.
