Abstract:

The University of Wisconsin Parkside's Year for Action was a federally funded program, which began in July of 1976 and continued until August of 1977. Parkside received a federal grant from the ACTION agency, which handled domestic volunteer programs. The objectives were to alleviate conditions of poverty utilizing University resources and to assist in developing, expanding, and institutionalizing the experiential learning model advocated by the University Year for Action program. Parkside's Year for Action was designed for students to work for community agencies while at the same time earning thirty college credits a year.

Reverend Eugene Boutilier of the Racine Urban Ministry served as temporary program director from July to August of 1976. In August of 1976 Joyce Fite Hamlin was appointed permanent director. Ms. Hamlin's primary function as the program director was to monitor each student's progress within the various agencies and to give students direction when the need arose along with faculty and staff advisors. Prior to coming to Parkside, Ms. Hamlin was administrative coordinator for the National Council for Black Child Development in Washington, DC.

The Parkside Year for Action series includes the following: files on community agencies and student participants, operational handbooks and guides, and general correspondence. Also an Award for Excellence in Volunteerism was presented to the program, and is included in the collection.

The files are organized alphabetically and then chronologically within each subject.
