Abstract:

General subject files and course materials from the Biological Sciences Department (formerly Life Sciences), 1966-2001. This series also includes material from UW-Parkside's first symposium, “Biochemistry of Brain and Memory,” in 1970, and a Founders' Day celebration in 2001.

Life Science was created in 1969 under the College of Science and Society. In 1976, the academic structure of UWP was reorganized, and Life Science was moved under the newly created Science Division. In 1987, the name of the department was changed to Biological Sciences, and in 1989, was moved under the new School of Science and Technology in another reorganization. In 1997, it was moved under the College of Arts and Sciences, and in 2012, after another reorganization, the College of Natural and Health Sciences.

The files are organized into two series: Life Science and Biological Sciences. Within these series, material is arranged alphabetically, then chronologically.

	Subseries: Harlow B. Mills files, 1966-1970 Note: Mills served on the Racine Center staff before becoming a professor of biology at Parkside. In 1970, he became the acting Dean of the College of Science and Society in 1970. He resigned because of poor health and died shortly afterward.	⇧

	Subseries: Symposium on Biochemistry of Brain and Memory, 1970 Note: This was the first important symposium sponsored by Parkside and was partially intended to give the new campus more visibility in the scientific community. Professors Surinder Datta and Norbert Isenberg (Chemistry) were co-chairmen of the organizing committee for the symposium. A second symposium was planned for 1972 but, lacking internal support, never materialized.	⇧
