Biography/History

Mildred Jane Pierce Wells, was born in Wilmington, Delaware on November 8, 1910. Between 1938 and 1942, Mildred was employed by the Employers Mutual Liability Insurance Company in Milwaukee as a clerk. In October 1942, Pierce joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and went to Officer Candidate School at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. She was commissioned a third officer but did not start active duty until September 1, 1943. By this time, the WAAC had become the Women's Army Corp (WAC). Pierce served at various posts throughout the country and eventually was promoted from a captain to a major. She was honorably discharged in either July 1945 or July 1946.

After the war she married Mackey Wells, Jr. and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned her degree in Social Work. She was later employed by the Wisconsin Correctional Services.

Mildred Jane Pierce Wells died on September 29, 1980.
