Papers of a Milwaukee attorney primarily concerned with
breeding and showing Irish and Fox Terriers. Included are his files of correspondence with
other breeders as well as the records he amassed while a member of various dog clubs. A few
of the letters to other breeders include references to the fighting between Catholics and
Protestants in Northern Ireland during the late 1960s. The collection also includes
memorabilia from dog shows he attended, including ribbons, certificates and catalogs. Much
of the collection consists of dog show catalogs.

Biography/History
John S. Best was born in Arlington Heights, Illinois, in 1906 and studied business at the
University of Wisconsin in Madison. After earning a degree in commerce in 1928, he attended
the University of Wisconsin Law School from which he graduated with honors in 1930. He
served for a time as counsel for the Wisconsin Tax Commission. In 1938, he joined the
Milwaukee Law firm of Lecher, Michael, Whyte & Spohn. He was made a partner in 1943, and
the firm's name was later changed to Michael, Best & Friedrich. He had a long and
distinguished career in tax law. He served on the Wisconsin Bar Association's Board of
Governors and was a director of the Wisconsin Society of Certified Public Accountants.
In 1932 John S. Best began breeding and showing Irish Terriers and Smooth Fox Terriers.
During his lifetime he raised thirty-four champions at his "Blackacre" kennel. His Irish
Terrier "Ch. Blackacre Barrister" was named the outstanding dog of the breed in the United
States in 1977 and 1978. Throughout his life, Best was an active participant in dog shows
and in numerous clubs and organizations dedicated to the interests of dog owners. He was a
former president of the Irish Terrier Club of America, and a founder of the Badger Kennel
Club. He also held numerous offices in the Irish Terrier Club of Chicago and the Fox Terrier
Club of America.
Mr. Best died in 1989.
Scope and Content Note
Papers of a Milwaukee area attorney. The majority of the collection focuses on Best's
interest in breeding and showing Irish and Fox Terriers.
The collection consists of articles, correspondence, canine periodicals, dog club
publications, dog pedigrees, memorabilia from dog shows, and newspaper clippings. John S.
Best wrote several unidentified articles while a member of the Irish Terrier Club of
America. The articles are included in the collection along with articles written for
journals. The majority of the correspondence is letters between Best and other dog breeders
regarding the buying and selling of championship show dogs. Of note among these letters is
Best's correspondence with Charles P. Lynch, a breeder who lived in Northern Ireland.
Included in these letters are references to the Protestant uprisings in Northern Ireland in
1969. Additional correspondence deals with Best's involvement with a number of dog clubs,
including his membership on the Board of Governors of the Irish Terrier Club of America. The
dog pedigrees that have been retained in the collection are for several of Best's dogs as
well as other champion dogs. Among the memorabilia from championship dog shows are ribbons,
certificates, and show catalogs. The newspaper clippings are predominantly of John Best's
champion dogs.
After Mr. Best's death in 1989 his wife continued to collect issues of popular dog
periodicals as well as attend local dog shows. These materials, dated through 1997, are
included in the collection.

The first series includes all non-catalog materials, such as memorabilia, correspondence,
newspaper clippings, newsletters, reports, committee minutes, and other publications from
associations of dog owners. These files are arranged alphabetically by subject, then
chronologically. The second series includes all of the dog show catalogs. These files are
organized alphabetically by name of the dog club, then chronologically. The third series
contains a single manuscript written by John S. Best. The fourth series consists of dog
pedigrees recorded on index cards and alphabetically arranged.

There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all
members of the public in accordance with state law.
The researcher assumes full responsibility for conforming with the laws of libel,
privacy, and copyright which may be involved in the use of this collection (Wisconsin
Statutes 19.21-19.39).
John Alley and Helen Best donated the collection to the Archives in June 1999 (accession
1999-002). Mike Best donated a second accession on November 9, 1999 (accession 1999-036).
Mary Best donated some additional materials in November 2004 (2004-035).
Stephanie Williams processed the collection at the Archives from July 1999 to January
2000. Mary Huelsbeck processed the second accession in March through April 2001. Christel
Maass added materials from accession 2004-035 to box 12 of the collection in July
2012.
