Abstract:
This collection mainly documents Ruth Kriehn's time at the Mary Wigman School of Dance in Berlin from 1951 to 1952 and her friendship with and admiration for Mary Wigman, a world-famous modern dance pioneer. Included are Kriehn's typed memoirs, letters from Wigman to Kriehn, and photographs of Wigman. Articles and newspaper clippings about Wigman are also included in the collection. The collection also contains some information about other teachers at the Wigman School, including Margret Dietz. Of particular interest are the war stories from those at the school and the descriptions of life in Berlin after the war.

Biography/History

Ruth Kriehn taught dance at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1953-1978.

Arrangement of the Materials

The collection contains three binders. The first binder mainly focuses on Mary Wigman and the school; the second binder focuses on other teachers at the school, classes and students, and includes impressions and stories of East Berlin; and the third binder mainly contains pictures of and articles about Mary Wigman.
