Abstract:

Papers of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) professor who served as a faculty member, department head, and acting dean of UWM's School of Social Welfare and its predecessor institutions. Most of the collection dates from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. The collection is notable for filling gaps in the official records of the school, especially for the early 1960s. The majority of the collection consists of miscellaneous records created or compiled by Teter, filed chronologically under the name of the school and its predecessors. The records document the early development of the social work education program, notably the evolution of the curriculum and the establishment of an independent School of Social Welfare. Also contains files on the development of a Ph.D. degree, and minutes and background materials of various curriculum committees and committees concerning the organization and structure of the school. The collection does not contain any papers on Teter's professional activities, research, or teaching.

John W. Teter was born on November 7, 1909 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He began working at the Wisconsin State Teacher's College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in September 1938. He served as head of the Department of Social Work between 1956-63, and as acting dean of the School of Social Welfare between 1972-74. He retired in 1980.

The files are organized alphabetically by name of office, or by subject, then chronologically. Files can contain a variety of materials, including correspondence, staff memos, and reports.

An unknown donor transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989.

Processing Information

Mark A. Vargas processed the collection at the Archives in November 1993. The files generated or compiled by Teter while he was head of the Department of Social Work were left in his manuscript collection, rather than integrated with the official School of Social Welfare records, to preserve the context in which they were created.
