Biography/History

The Center for Children's Literature was established in October 1998. Center Director John Warren Stewig, a professor in the School of Education and expert on children's literature pedagogy, accumulated the original collection of nearly 17,000 volumes. Part of the collection was a gift from Bette Peltola, a respected professor of children's literature at UWM.

To provide a resource for nurturing a love of reading books, the center provided more than 20,000 titles that been carefully selected from the numerous books published for children in the last 20 years. Much of the growth of the collection came courtesy of children's books publishers, who would send solicited and unsolicited copies of their books for use by the Center in teaching and research. Besides serving as a lending library for children's literature materials, the center held many workshops, lectures, and seminars by noted children's authors and illustrators each year.

In Autumn 2004, Professor Stewig took a faculty position at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the Center for Children's Literature relocated to that campus.

Scope and Content Note

Records of the Center for Children's Literature, a lending library and research center formerly run by the School of Education that existed to "provide resources for nurturing a love of reading books." Most of the records in the collection date from 1998 to 2004, and concern the Center's establishment, operation, and funding. The majority of the documentation consists of the correspondence of Center founder and director John Warren Stewig with authors and other children's literature foundations. Also included in the collection are materials from public programs, including a celebration of Curious George author H. A. Rey, author talks with Ellen Raskin, Lois Ehlert, and Jules Feiffer, and workshops on writing, dramatizing, and publicizing children's literature. Also included is a promotional video created by the center, which showcases the resources offered and provides information on the center's history.
