Abstract:

Documents cover the work of the American Ethnic Studies Coordinating Committee (AESCC) from 1976-1986, and the establishment of the Institute on Race and Ethnicity (IRE) in 1987 and its functions. The collection consists primarily of IRE funded grant final reports and correspondence, and also committee minutes, internal and external evaluations of the Institute, and correspondence concerning conferences, seminars, and publications.

The University of Wisconsin System established the Institute on Race and Ethnicity in 1987 at its current site at UW-Milwaukee. Its creation was the result of a merger between the UW System American Ethnic Studies Coordinating Committee and the UWM Center for the Study of Minorities and the Disadvantaged.

Created to serve as a catalyst for scholarly research and curricular innovation in racial and ethnic studies across the UW System, the IRE issues support grants to encourage curricular activities, research, and programs, develops a network of faculty, staff, and students, and sponsors conferences, seminars, and workshops.

The IRE's support grants categories in the past have been: A (Research), B (Curriculum Development), C (Campus Activities), Faculty Diversity Research Awards, Minority Faculty Research Awards (MFRA), Faculty Research Scholar/Public Lecture Awards.

In 2011, the Institute for Race and Ethnicity was dissolved and its granting functions merged into the UW-System Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

Acquisition Information

These records were transferred to the Archives at an unknown date (2002-042). The Institute sent some additional newsletters in April 2010. The Institute on Race and Ethnicity transferred additional materials to the Archives in January 2007 (accession 2006-028). Some additional records of the institute were acquired in January 2013 (accession 2012-038) and separated from the Winston Van Horne papers in May 2015.

Processing Information

Jessica Sawinski processed this collection in October 2006. Christel Maass and Brad Houston added some additional newsletters to the collection in April 2010. Matt Eidem (supervised by Christel Maass) processed accession 2006-028 (boxes 5-7) in March and April 2011. Brad Houston added materials from the Winston Van Horne papers in May 2015. Molly Whiteside (supervised by Christel Maass) added some miscellaneous items to the collection in September 2015.
