Abstract:

Records of the Delta Eta chapter of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The collection consists of chapter histories, constitution and bylaws, concert programs, correspondence, membership records, minutes, financial records, scrapbooks, and sheet music.

The Delta Eta chapter of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity was active at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1941 to 1998. The purpose of Delta Omicron is to create and foster fellowship through music at the collegiate level. The Delta Eta chapter, during its existence, was involved with musical performances, scholarship competitions, community service, and national and local meetings and conferences. The organization also recruited new members, planned activities, and performed initiation ceremonies and other ritual acts. Additional chapters in the region were established at Alverno College (Gamma Gamma), UW-Stevens Point (Alpha Alpha), UW-Oshkosh (Omicron Chi), UW-Whitewater (Omicron Phi), and the Wisconsin College Conservatory of Music of Milwaukee (Delta Epsilon).

The collection consists primarily of scrapbooks compiled almost annually by Delta Eta members. The scrapbooks document the group's local activities and variably include photographs, concert and event announcements and programs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and memorabilia. Some feature original illustrations. Scrapbooks that were in poor condition were re-housed in archival material, with the page order maintained.

The administrative records include financial and membership records, and meeting minutes, as well as chapter manuals.

The files are organized alphabetically by subject, then chronologically.

This collection originally contained an additional 1.4 cubic feet of sheet music, which were transferred to the UWM Music Library.

There are no access restrictions on the materials, and the collection is open to all members of the public in accordance with state law.

Acquisition Information

Mary McCoy from the Peck School of the Arts, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, donated this collection in 2004 (accession 2004-063).

Processing Information

J. McFarlane and Ellen Engseth processed the collection at the Archives in September-December, 2005.

Deaccession Information

At the request of national chapter president Dr. Jonny Ramsey, two folders of materials relating to the fraternity's secret rituals were removed from the collection by Jeremy Brett in October 2006. These materials were returned to the national chapter in accordance with the organization's by-laws, which mandate such action upon the dissolution of a chapter.
