Abstract:

Records of the UW-Milwaukee Department of History which documents the correspondence of various chairs, the functions of committees, and the minutes of general departmental meetings. Of particular interest is the 1988 Department of History Directory, which contains biographical information on past and present faculty and administrative assistants, lists of chairpersons for the important committees, and a brief history of the department. UWM Chancellor Werner Baum and Mayor Henry Maier initiated The Goals for Greater Milwaukee 2000 (1982) project to analyze the contemporary and future strengths and problems of Milwaukee. The collection contains the project's correspondence, publicity file, and eleven oral history interviews. Urbanism Past & Present (1973-1986) was a periodical sponsored by the Department of History, which ceased in 1985. Included are issues (1975-1984) as well as a file on the founding, history, mission, meetings, and editorial decisions of the journal.

The UWM Department of History was founded in 1956 upon the merger of the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The new department elected John W. Nash as its first chair and implemented a course and curriculum structure similar to that of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where five of the original eight professors had studied. The department established a master's degree in 1960.

Acquisition Information

An unknown individual transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989.

Processing Information

David Klingeman began processing the collection at the Archives in February 1996. Tom Jorsch finished processing the collection at the Archives in June 1996. Jeremy Brett added a few files from the office "dribble file" in January 2007. Christel Maass added a 1992 newsletter to the collection in November 2016. Christel Maass added previously cataloged publications to the collection in February 2017.
