Abstract:
Collection consists of Max Kurz's correspondence files which document his activities as associate professor and Field Work Committee chair from 1958 to 1963, coordinator of Graduate Field Instruction from 1963 to 1965, and associate dean in 1965. Collection includes correspondence with the chair of the school, faculty, guest lecturers, and community organizations regarding intern placement, grant and research funding, speaking engagements, and curriculum development.

Biography/History

In the 1950s, undergraduate courses in social work were offered at the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee. In 1956, when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) was established, the Department of Social Work was created and administered within the College of Letters & Science. In April 1963, the School of Social Work was established, headed by a director, and remained part of the College of Letters & Science. The School of Social Welfare was created in July 1965, headed by a dean, and was made independent of the college.

Abstract: Records from Max Kurz reflecting his work as Associate Dean of the School of Social Welfare (1965-1970) and after (1971-1994). Most of the accession consists of Kurz' correspondence with Social Welfare faculty and preparatory material for all-school meetings. Also included are a number of syllabi for courses offered in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
