Abstract:

The records document the activities of the Board of Visitors and the committees it appointed, to study and advise the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) administration on many questions regarding the university. Minutes, annual reports, correspondence, and research reports identify issues that the board studied, such as recruitment and retention of minority students, collective bargaining, and relations with the students, the public, and the business community. The records also contain information regarding the creation of the Board of Visitors, the nomination of members, biographies of board members, and bylaws.

The Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System created the UWM Board of Visitors on July 14, 1978. Citizens from the local community serve on the board whose purpose is to become informed about the institution's missions, purpose, achievements, and problems. The board advises and assists the institution's administration in communicating with faculty, students, prospective students, parents, alumni, government officials, and the general public. Also, the board suggests to the chancellor ways to improve the institution's services to and relationships with the students, faculty, community, and the state. The board, at the request of the Regents, the System President, the chancellor, or on its own initiative, conducts inquiries into specific matters and make reports and recommendations.

An unknown individual transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989.
