Abstract:

Publications and miscellaneous records of the Urban Research Center (URC) from 1973 to 1997. The research publications document health, economy, violence, ecology, development, and other urban issues most often using Milwaukee as the area of study. The collection also contains papers delivered at URC-sponsored conferences, including The Crisis of Authority: Citizen Boards and the Governance of Public and Private Agencies (1980), Lethal Aspects of Urban Violence (1977), Milwaukee's Economy: Federal Programs, Local Resources and Community Action (1977), and Public Agency Accountability in an Urban Society (1977). The collection also contains quarterly reports from the study Building Capacity in Milwaukee's Inner City (1994-1997). There is some correspondence dealing with the events leading up to the center's formation and organization, and progress reports and newsletter publications which further document the center's development.

The Urban Research Center was established on July 1, 1974 as a Graduate School unit serving UWM faculty and students who submit research proposals for extramural funding. It acts as a contact between the University and the Milwaukee community for research assistance, works as the institutional representative for Roper Public Opinion Center, and conducts other special projects. The mission of the center is to encourage and support research, communication, and development of theory relevant to the policy needs of an urban society. The Urban Research Center reports to the Graduate School.

Acquisition Information

An unknown individual transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989. The UWM Libraries' Technical Services Division transferred accession 2008-052 to the Archives in February 2009, and accession 2008-059 in April 2009.

Processing Information

Rhonda Huber processed the original collection at the Archives in October 1995. Sarah Ethier processed accession 2008-052 in March 2009 (Brad Houston supervised). Brad Houston processed accession 2008-059 in January 2010.
