Biography/History

The University of Wisconsin System established the Midwest Institute on Drug Use (MIDU) within the UWM College of Letters & Science in the summer of 1974. It was discontinued in 1978. MIDU was supported by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which awarded the university a research grant of $70,000 in June 1974 to establish a Midwest drug abuse project. The structure of MIDU brought together research by UWM's departments of Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology and Economics. Khalil A. Khavari (professor of Psychology), principal investigator for the NIDA award, was appointed director of the Institute by Dean William Halloran and served from 1974 to 1978. Members of the Advisory Committee for MIDU who contributed major research on behalf of MIDU included:
