Abstract:
Miscellaneous records of the department's chairs, largely consisting of correspondence (1957-1976) with the dean of the College of Letters & Science concerning funding, staffing, and curriculum development. Also contains grant research reports; faculty meeting minutes (1963-2001); issues of the department's alumni newsletter (1965-1970); graduate program material, which includes three five-year reviews; a handbook for students; and annual summaries of academic activities (1973-1981). Also included are a proposal for an Earth and Space Sciences building, material on the opening of the Greene Geological Museum of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, several Ph.D. proposals and material regarding summer field programs. There is some information (1978) on a proposed University of Wisconsin System Mining and Mineral Research Institute, which was never established. Material predating 1962, created by the dean of the College of Letters & Science and the UW-Madison Department of Geology, concerns the formation of the department at Milwaukee, development of the curriculum, and hiring of faculty members.
