Biography/History

The Committee for Linguistics recommended the establishment of a Department of Linguistics in October 1963. The Department of Linguistics was established and began offering classes in September 1964, with Gareth W. Dunleavy of the English Department acting as the first department chair. The department does not offer a post-graduate program leading to an advanced degree in linguistics; however, several other departments and schools within the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee cooperate with the Department of Linguistics to offer an emphasis in linguistics within their respective programs. Advanced degree programs which cross-list classes with the Department of Linguistics include the Master of Foreign Language and Literature, Master of Fine Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in English, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology, and the Doctoral program in Urban Education.

In 1996, the department became a program in the Department of Foreign Languages and Linguistics.
