Biography/History

The Dept. of Speech was formed within the Milwaukee State Teachers College, a predecessor of UWM. In 1956, when UWM was established, the Dept. of Speech became part of the College of Letters & Science. In 1967 the department's name was changed to the Dept. of Communication.

Scope and Content Note

The majority of the collection is comprised of meeting minutes and program reviews. The faculty meeting minutes focus mostly on budget and curriculum issues. Materials documenting the development of the master's program in speech pathology and audiology are also found within the collection. The collection contains some materials documenting the Hearing Evaluation Center, which operated as part of the Dept. of Speech; the development of the Speech Communication Center; and the university theatre program.

The material added in 2016 includes a number of statistical reports taken from the department and its students. Other items of interest include additional faculty meeting minutes, graduate and undergraduate program reviews, departmental newsletters, and course syllabi.

Arrangement of the Materials

The materials are arranged alphabetically by subject, then chronologically. The Syllabi are arranged by course number.

Acquisition Information

An unknown individual transferred the collection to the Archives prior to 1989. The Department of Communication transferred accession 2015-005 in July 2015.


Processing Information

Christel T. Maass reprocessed the collection at the Archives in January 1994. Ashlie Biddle minimally processed accession 2015-005 in August 2015 (Brad Houston supervised). Brad Houston fully processed accession 2015-005 in November 2015. Ashlie Biddle reprocessed accession 2015-005 in February 2016.
