Abstract:

Records of the department chairman largely consisting of correspondence and meeting minutes of numerous committees. The correspondence files mainly contain letters between the department chairman and the dean and associate dean of the College of Letters & Science. The collection documents course and curriculum developments, staffing, space, budget, donations and acquisitions, research projects, committee activities, and other matters of concern.

Included in the collection are materials regarding the graduate program, a Ph.D. program proposal, and the Department of Zoology/Microbiology minutes and correspondence. The bulk of the Microbiology correspondence consists of copies of outgoing letters of assistant professor Cynthia V. Sommer largely regarding courses and research activities.

The Zoology Department was established in 1956 when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was created. A microbiology sub-area was added to the department in 1977 with Charles C. Remsen serving as coordinator (1977-1984). In 1984 the Zoology Department merged with the Botany Department to form the Department of Biological Sciences.
