Abstract:
Records of the department chair include brochures, correspondence, and department and executive committee meeting minutes. The correspondence files (1956-1973) largely consist of correspondence between the department chair and the dean and associate dean of the College of Letters & Science, documenting staffing, budget, special events, course and curriculum developments, including the development of a graduate program in French and the proposal for a major in Italian. The department minutes (1957-1988) contain similar information regarding staff appointments and promotions, course offerings and teaching assignments, enrollment, and other announcements and matters of concern. The executive committee minutes (1963-1981) document personnel appointments and promotions.

Biography/History

The Dept. of French and Italian was established in 1956 when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee was created. Prior to 1956 French courses were offered by the Wisconsin State College, Milwaukee, Dept. of Foreign Languages. Italian instruction was not available before 1956. The department changed its name in 1996 from The Department of French and Italian to The Department of French, Italian, and Comparative Literature.

Acquisition Information

The collection originally consisted of two small series transferred to the Archives prior to 1989. The department transferred additional materials to the Archives in June 2013 (accession 2012-056) and August 2014 (accession 2014-014).

Web crawling is managed through the Internet Archive's Archive-It services. This series includes links to both the university's collection and the Internet Archive's public collection. Web records from UWM are collected on a semi-annual basis. Crawls of the UWM Website may be performed at more frequent intervals in cases of major events, significant additions or changes to the UWM Website or the websites of schools and colleges, etc. Social Media feeds are crawled on an as-requested basis.


Processing Information

Christel T. Maass reprocessed the collection at the Archives in October 1993. Christel Maass updated the finding aid to include information about accession 2012-056 in September 2013 and information about accession 2014-014 in August 2014. Brad Houston and Claire Dinkelman updated the finding aid in April and July 2017 to include information on the Web Series.
