Biography/History

The Model School, later called the Campus Elementary School, was an integral part of the Wisconsin State Normal School in Milwaukee when it opened in 1885. The school was used by students both for observation of the work done by the regular teachers, and for the training of teachers. The school was known by other names at various times: Training School; Campus Training School; College Elementary School; Campus Laboratory School; and more recently, Campus School. The Campus School closed in June 1970.

Among the School's directors were: Eleanor T. McLaughlin, 1949?-1952; Frank M. Himmelmann, 1952-1956; Stanley S. Stahl, Jr., 1956-1958; Wendell J. Hunt, 1959-1960. In 1960 two newly defined positions were created with James B. Macdonald appointed Director of School Experimentation and Research and served as Chairman of the Campus Elementary School. At the same time Donald M. Matheson was appointed to the position of Principal and served as Administrator of the Campus Elementary School program for children. In 1965 John N. Fleming assumed the position of director; he was followed by Luther W. Pfluger in 1967.

Scope and Content Note

Records of the Campus Elementary School. The earliest records date back to 1925 when the school was known as the Training School. The records largely document programs and activities, both for students and parents, that took place at the school.

The correspondence files (1946-1970) contain correspondence of the school's directors and document issues of concern to teachers and parents, programs and activities, Campus School physical changes, curriculum developments, and staffing. Included within these files are correspondence with the Dean of the School of Education.

Letters to parents (1959-1971) inform parents of meetings to discuss topics of interest regarding their children and include announcements of projects, classroom and special activities, and student programs.

Included in the collection are a number of publications relating to the Campus School. Our School Reports (1952-1962) contain school schedules, faculty information, school happenings, parental involvement, and parent-teacher news. The earliest publication in the collection is the Training School News (1938-1941) containing room news, literary, sports, activities and trips, and poetry pages. Similar in content is the Training School Trumpet annual (1949-1955). Beginning with the 1950 edition this publication included photographs of the graduating class and other school activities. In addition to several Research Bulletins, the collection also includes "A Study of the Junior Kindergarten Experience," by Ethel W. Kunkle, Associate Professor in Early Childhood Education.

The report files include annual reports which summarize activities of the past year and also describe desired future directions for the school. The annual reports describe the functions of the school and its educational programs. The report files also contain meeting and committee reports as well as miscellaneous studies and reports about trends, staff needs, location, operations and structure, progress and project reports, and the summer school program. Information on the role of the Campus School as well as a student paper on the history of the school are included in the collection.

The collection also contains an extensive series of Parent Teacher Association (PTA) files (1925-1971). Included therein are annual reports of programs and activities, including committee and financial reports; correspondence, largely pertaining to lectures and activities for parents; letters to parents of children in different grades inviting them to special discussions on topics of interest to parents with children in that age group; membership, officer, and committee lists; Memo (1950-1952), a parental bulletin of school information and miscellaneous advice for parents; meeting minutes; notices of upcoming events.

Other materials of interest include programs, student rosters, and photographs. The collection also contains letters and drawings (1953) as well as a book from German students (in German; book contains English translations).
