Biography

Dr. Vernon Dale Kendrick, UW-La Crosse Professor of Art, was born in Wichita Kansas on February 17th, 1928. Dr. Kendrick, who went by Dale, served with the Army of the United States Headquarters, First U.S. Infantry Division, Occupational Forces Pfc. Tec. 4, Surgeon Section from May 10th, 1945 to March 31st, 1947.

After this, he received his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana) in 1950 and his master’s degree from the State University of Iowa (Iowa City, Iowa) in 1951. From 1951 to 1952 he was an instructor at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. From there, he moved on to an assistant professor position at Arkansas State College in Jonesboro, Arkansas; where he worked until 1954. After a two year gap, he began working at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a visiting lecturer in 1956, a position he held until 1958. In 1960, he received his Ph.D. from Penn State University (University Park, Pennsylvania). In the same year, his employment at UW-La Crosse began. Dr. Kendrick was a professor in the Art Department from 1960 to 1990, and department chair from 1960 to 1974.

One of Dr. Kendrick’s main interests was painting on unusual surfaces, and he taught a studio art class with this emphasis. Objects he painted on included lunch trays, oven doors, fabric, and wood. Much of Dr. Kendrick’s art could be described as “unusual,” and he is sometimes remembered for his interest in erotic art, particularly an art show he once held that featured only phallic pieces. While at UW-La Crosse he taught a class on the history of erotic art. Perhaps due to the provocative nature of some of his artistic interests and pieces, Dr. Kendrick did not always sign his real name to his art. Instead he used “Vadeekay,” derived from his initials, from 1961 until 1982. Another prominent interest of Dr. Kendrick’s was travel. He led regular art tours to Egypt, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Israel, and Jordan. These international art tours occurred almost yearly from 1978 until 2002, despite Dr. Kendrick’s retirement from UW-La Crosse in 1990. He also led art tours to Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York from 1975 until 1997.

Dr. Kendrick passed away at the age of 75 on October 31st, 2003, but he left a lasting impression on UW-La Crosse and the greater La Crosse community. In addition to sculptures that stood for many years in La Crosse, such as a piece featuring pictographs that was displayed in front of the Tribune offices until 2013, he and his wife, Betty, were responsible for several art awards and scholarships. During Dr. Kendrick’s lifetime, he and Betty established the “Behind the Brewery Gallery Award” in 1989 and the “Louise Drumm Art Award,” in 1996. The “Betty and Dale Kendrick Scholarship for Studio Art in Painting” was established through the UW-L foundation in his memory as well.
