Biography/History

Commonly referred to as the "Milwaukee Road" (or simply "The Road"), the origins of this railroad began in 1847, when the Milwaukee and Waukesha Railroad was incorporated. Three years later its first train operated between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and by 1857, its track reached Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. In February 1874, the name changed to the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway as it continued to expand throughout the Midwest. By 1887, it reached into Iowa and South Dakota, as far west as Kansas City, Missouri, and north into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In 1905, the Milwaukee Road decided to expand west again, this time to Puget Sound in Washington. The "Lines West" were built between 1906-1909, from the middle of South Dakota to Seattle and Tacoma in Washington. Even though the lines were technological marvels, they were never successful, and were a major contributor to the bankruptcy in 1925. In 1928 the Road reorganized as the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, but went bankrupt again in 1935 and 1945. In 1977, in financial trouble once more, it reorganized and sold off two-thirds of its trackage. It was acquired by the Soo Line Corp. on February 21, 1985, which operated it as the Milwaukee Road, Inc. until merging it with their own lines on January 1, 1986.

Important dates during the 1977 Reorganization process:
December 19, 1977 Milwaukee Road files petition with U.S. District Court for reorganization under the Bankruptcy Act.
February 9, 1978 U.S. District Court confirms appointment of Stanley Hillman as Trustee of Milwaukee Road property.
April 23, 1979 Trustee Hillman petitions the U.S. District Court to embargo Milwaukee Road lines.
August 10, 1979 Trustee’s Reorganization Plan is filed with the U.S. District Court and the Interstate Commerce Commission.
August 22, 1979 Richard Ogilvie succeeds Stanley Hillman as Trustee.
November 1, 1979 Embargo on approximately 4,800 miles of Milwaukee Road lines.
March 19, 1980 Interstate Commerce Commission rejects the Milwaukee Road’s reorganization plan.
September 15, 1981 Milwaukee Road files new Reorganization Plan.
April 1, 1983 Trustee Ogilvie files amended Reorganization Plan calling for sale of Milwaukee Road to Grand Trunk Corporation.
July 22, 1983 Chicago and North Western makes offer to purchase Milwaukee Road.
February 17, 1984 Soo Line Railroad Company applies for acquiring operating assets of Milwaukee Road.
February 8, 1985 Judge Thomas McMillan approves the Soo Line’s offer over the Chicago and North Western offer.
February 19, 1985 Soo Line purchases the property of the bankrupt Milwaukee Road.
Scope and Content Note

The 1925 Reorganization series consists of seven folders. It includes background information on the Milwaukee Road’s first bankruptcy, along with a 1925 reorganization plan developed by bankers Kuhn, Loeb & Company and National City Bank. The 1935 Reorganization series contains eighteen folders. It includes background information on the 1935 bankruptcy, financial records about expenses incurred during the reorganization, and several different reorganization plans.

The 1977 Reorganization series includes several boxes of materials about the three organizations that attempted to purchase the Milwaukee Road: the Chicago and North Western Transportation Co., the Grand Trunk Corporation, and the Soo Line Railroad. The materials contain correspondence, court documents, and newspaper articles. Other significant materials in the series include: general correspondence and court documents; newspaper articles about the 1977 Reorganization; background material on Save Our Railroad Employment, an organization formed by employees of the Milwaukee Road; a comprehensive strategic plan by Booz, Allen and Hamilton; and four different reorganization plans compiled by the Milwaukee Road trustee.
