Biography/History

Commonly referred to as the "Milwaukee Road" (or simply "The Road"), the origins of this railroad began in 1847, when the Milwaukee and Waukesha Railroad was incorporated. Three years later its first train operated between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and by 1857, its track reached Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. In February 1874, the name changed to the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway as it continued to expand throughout the Midwest. By 1887, it reached into Iowa and South Dakota, as far west as Kansas City, Missouri, and north into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

In 1905, the Milwaukee Road decided to expand west again, this time to Puget Sound in Washington. The "Lines West" were built between 1906-1909, from the middle of South Dakota to Seattle and Tacoma in Washington. Even though the lines were technological marvels, they were never successful, and were a major contributor to the bankruptcy in 1925. In 1928 the Road reorganized as the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, but went bankrupt again in 1935 and 1945. In 1977, in financial trouble once more, it reorganized and sold off two-thirds of its trackage. It was acquired by the Soo Line Corp. on February 21, 1985, which operated it as the Milwaukee Road, Inc. until merging it with their own lines on January 1, 1986.

The Mechanical Department of the Milwaukee Road served a variety of functions but was primarily involved the repair, maintenance, and inspection of cars and locomotives. This includes most types of cars, such as freight, passenger, tenders, and service cars as well as both electric and diesel locomotives. It also dealt with other matters such as design, construction, modification, and retirements. The “shops” are where most of this work would take place, which were usually located at prominent points along the Road, such as Milwaukee, Chicago, Tacoma, and Minneapolis.

Scope and Content Note

Scope and content notes of each series are provided in the contents list.

Arrangement of the Materials

The collection is arranged into the following series:

  1. Freight Cars, 1925-1983
  2. Locomotives, 1901-1999
  3. Passenger Cars, 1907-1975
  4. Shops, 1881-1984
  5. Special Service Cars, 1937-1985
  6. Tenders, 1940-1948

The collection is (generally) in alphabetical order by subject or personal name, then chronologically within each folder. A number of folders contain specific, labeled files (for example, as C-5-2384, C-8-396, etc.) bound together, whose documents are ordered from most recent to oldest in some instances and from oldest to most recent in others. Upon processing, when due to size, these bound and labeled files stretch over more than one folder, the folders are labeled with a, b, c, etc. after the folder number indicating that the documents in these files were originally bound together.

Series: 3. Passenger Cars, 1907-1975
Scope and Content Note: These records comprise all passenger car historical documents, drawings, and photographs. Each folder is labeled with the car type (e.g. Coach, Baggage, Express, etc.) and the assigned two, three, or four digit car number. Specific “car names” are included in quotes after the car number(s) when available. Passenger car records are quite complete from the 1930s through the 1960s. These records document a car’s purpose, any modifications done to the car including renumbering and intended use (such as coach cars converted to baggage cars) and likewise include the dates on which such changes were completed.
