Abstract:
The Wagons of Milwaukee Businesses album came to the library from the estate of Theodore Habhegger, a Milwaukee manufacturer of short turn wagons. The album itself consists of 37 sepia-toned photographs of wagons, mostly belonging to various Milwaukee area businesses, from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Likely, it was originally used as a catalog of the types of wagons produced by Habhegger’s business.

Biography/History

Theodore Habhegger (1830-1901) was born in Switzerland and came to America in 1849. He learned wagon and carriage making at the Reading & Kingsley shop, which Habhegger bought in 1856. The Theo. Habhegger Co. specialized in building wagons for grocers, brewers, butchers, and other local businesses. The company was passed onto his sons Theodore F. (1867-1932) and Carl G. (1872-1912), and later his grandson Theodore C. (1899-1965). Other family members worked in the business as well. At this point the company was now specializing in automobile repairs, rather than wagon making. The company stills operates today under the name Habhegger Wheel & Axle, but is no longer affiliated with the Habhegger family.

Scope and Content Note

The album contains 37 photographs which were originally in black and white. The photos have long since faded to a sepia tone. The photos are all of horse-drawn wagons which makes it likely that they were created around the turn of the 20th century. The majority of the photos in this collection are of wagons that were created for Milwaukee area businesses by the Theo. Habhegger Co.

Arrangement of the Materials

The album was found to be in a deteriorated state, and pages were removed from the album and placed in individual folders, keeping the original order in which the pages appeared in the album.
