Biography/History
Stereoscopic images have been in existence since the early 19th century. The
side-by-side images on stereoscopic cards, one image for each eye, give the illusion
of a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. As a result of this
three-dimensional effect, stereoscopics were very popular throughout the 19th and
early 20th centuries. Later viewers, such as the View-Master, replaced the
stereoscope but the technology behind them is largely unchanged.
Scope and Content Note
The images in this collection are largely undated. A stereoscope is available to view
the items. The first box consists of 42 images of the City of Milwaukee. The
photographers of those images are H. W. Anger, H. H. Bennett, W. H. Sherman, William
P. Vollert, and the Union View Company, with some photographs that have no
indication as to the photographer. The second and third boxes contain 122 images of
Wisconsin, with the majority of the photos being of the Wisconsin Dells and having
been taken by H. H. Bennett. The photos not of the Wisconsin Dells include some of
Devil’s Lake, Adams and Juneau Counties, Janesville, Oconomowoc, and Genesee.
The fourth through seventh boxes contain photos from many different states in the
United States, particularly Michigan, Minnesota, and Colorado. They number 188
images in total. The photographers and companies who are responsible for the images
include: J. Carbutt, W. G. Chamberlain, Childs Art Gallery, George E. Curtis, Elmer
& Tenney, The Ingersoll View Company and T. W. Ingersoll, J. A. Jenney, E. W.
Kelley, the Keystone View Company, the Kilburn Brothers, M. Nowack, L. K. Oldroyd,
William H. Rau, S. R. Stoddard, J. Thurlow, Underwood & Underwood, C. L. Wasson,
Webster & Albee, C. W. Woodward, and Charles A. Zimmerman.
Boxes eight and nine contain international stereoviews. There are 73 international
images in total. The photographers and companies (not including those already listed
in the boxes of United States images) responsible for the images include the
International Stereograph Co. Box nine also includes miscellaneous scenes involving
people and animals. There are 81 images of people and animals in total. The
locations and people are not identified. The photographers and companies (not
including those already listed) responsible for these images include: George Barker,
C. H. Graves, M. LaRoche, Littleton View Co., B. L. Singley, and Universal Photo Art
Co.
Arrangement of the Materials
The City of Milwaukee stereoscopics are arranged in alphabetical subject headings
that mirror the subject headings used in the Milwaukee Historic Photo Collection
(MHPC-6). The Wisconsin images by H. H. Bennett are arranged according to the
numbers printed on the cards. They may have been meant to be a specific order or
series. Even though the series is not complete, the photos are arranged in numerical
order. The non-Bennett images at the end of the Wisconsin stereoscopics are arranged
alphabetically by the name of the municipality in the photos.
The images in the boxes with the remaining states (aside from Wisconsin) are arranged
alphabetically by the name of the state and within that by the name of the
municipality or location. Images that only give the state as the sum of the location
information are grouped together at the beginning of the images from that state. In
the international boxes, the images are ordered alphabetically by country. The
photos of people and animals are unidentified and without a location. As a result,
no specific order has been retained.
Other Finding Aids
A full finding aid of the Milwaukee photos can be found in the Catalog of Collections
binder. The finding aid also details individual photographers and donors of specific
Milwaukee images. No additional finding aid has been created for the non-Milwaukee
photos.
