Biography/History

The Koehring Company was founded in Milwaukee in 1907 by Phillip Koehring, W.J. Koehring, and Richard Kiel. The first products built by the Koehring Company were concrete mixers. The company quickly diversified, and by 1928 they manufactured pavers, gas and electric powered shovels, cranes, and draglines. Koehring Company’s first location was on 16th Street, but by 1928 they had moved to large office and manufacturing facilities on N. 31st Street and Concordia Ave. The company would grow to have locations not only across the United States but also internationally, in countries such as Canada, Cuba, the Netherlands, and Japan. The company merged with AMCA Ventures, Inc. in 1981. In January of 1987 Koehring Cranes and Excavators, Inc. was purchased by Terex Corp.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of 146 black and white photographs. The photos are mostly 7” x 9½” but smaller ones are included as well. Many of the photos show the different types of machinery being used in the field. Koehring provided machinery to companies and cities all over the United States, and the photos show the machinery being used mainly for paving by these various entities. Other photos appear to be images of machinery created for use in publications, such as catalogs and advertisements. These are images, many of which were likely retouched, that show the machinery on a plain white background.

Arrangement of the Materials

The materials are arranged in the order that they are listed in the index that accompanied the collection.

Other Finding Aids

A more detailed finding aid to the collection exists in the Catalog of Collections binder in the Humanities Department. The original index that accompanied the photographs is located in folder 133. Not all photographs listed in that index are included in the collection.
