Wis. in 1901; he lived there until 1923. He worked in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and New
York as a journalist, illustrator, cartoonist, novelist, and author.

Biography/History
Solomon Isaac Scheinfeld was a prominent rabbi in Milwaukee from 1901 until he died
on April 24, 1943. Specifically, he was the Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1902 to 1943. He was born in Lithuania on December 15,
1860 and married Sanna Rachel Scheinfeld (1863-1931) in 1887. In 1891 they
immigrated to the United States moved to Milwaukee in 1901. Rabbi Scheinfeld served
as general rabbi and Talmudic scholar for the orthodox communities in Milwaukee and
was a recognized authority in matters of ritual and ecclesiastical law. He enjoyed a
reputation as preacher and writer. Solomon and Sanna had five children, two
daughters: Rosalie and Ruhamoh, and three sons: Emanuel, Amram and Aaron.
Amram Scheinfeld (1897-1979) lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1901 until 1923. He
worked in Milwaukee, Baltimore, and New York as a journalist, illustrator,
cartoonist, novelist, and author. His contributions to journalism include the column
“Looking into People” in Cosmopolitan magazine from
1951 to 1965, and various articles in Collier’s, Reader’s
Digest, Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, and Ladies’ Home Journal. He authored books on the subject of heredity and
genetics for a general readership from 1939 to 1975. Scheinfeld died in New York
City on September 1, 1979.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains mainly writings of Amram Scheinfeld during the early part of
his life. Also included are sketches, certificates, several yarmulkes and a pair of
tefillin. There are notes throughout the collection added in the 1970s by
Scheinfeld. Additionally there are some Scheinfeld family photographs as well as a
certificate and photographs of Amram’s father, Rabbi Scheinfeld. Some of the
oversized newspaper clippings are in German and the large certificate in box 5 is in
possibly Hebrew.
Arrangement of the Materials
The subjects are generally arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within
each folder. Captions previously glued to the back of the photographs have been
typed and added to the appropriate folders.

There is currently no acquisition information available. In October 2019, four
boxes of archival materials housed in the Rare Books Collection were identified
as being part of this collection. The materials were then reunited and relocated
to the Local History Manuscripts archival collection. Materials were accessioned
as Local History Manuscripts.
