Abstract:

The Metropolitan Milwaukee Civic Alliance (MMCA) was formed in 1924. Its Lakefront Planning Committee, created in 1981, was one of many subcommittees of the MMCA. It was created to monitor the decision making process of Milwaukee’s waterfront.

The Lakefront Planning Committee (LPC) was a subcommittee of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Civic Alliance (MMCA). The MMCA was formed in 1924. It was a coalition of twenty-two service organizations. Their goal was to facilitate the discussion and resolution of community issues.

The LPC was one of many subcommittees of the MMCA. It was created to monitor the decision making process at all levels in the shaping and development of Milwaukee’s waterfront. This committee was organized in 1981. The committee’s interests grew to encompass the history, preservation, development, promotion, enhancement and remediation of all waterfront areas in Milwaukee, including the Milwaukee River estuary. Members monitored the activities of agencies and groups such as the Harbor Commission, the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission, the Milwaukee Remedial Action Plan, the North Harbor Network and the Historic Third Ward Association. Members attended meetings, collected reports, newspaper clippings and other relevant information concerning waterfront projects. They also provided lakefront information forums on key civic projects to facilitate and encourage public input in the decision process. Members were often active in major environmental programs impacting lakefront water quality and in special ad hoc task force groups dedicated to lakefront planning issues.

The collection mainly consists of correspondence, meeting agendas, planning notes and minutes, newspaper clippings and a variety of publications created, collected and used by the Lakefront Planning Committee. The bulk of the collection’s documents date from 1978 through 1990.

The subjects are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within each folder.
