Abstract:
Gerrit J. De Gelleke was a native Milwaukee architect who studied under, and later formed a partnership with fellow architect H. J. Van Ryn and designed many well known Milwaukee buildings. Gerrit and his brother Peter, also an architect, designed Milwaukee County General Hospital. This collection is some of De Gelleke's personal papers.

Biography/History

Gerrit J. De Gelleke (1872–1960) was a native Milwaukee architect who attended the Ninth Ward School, as well as the old East Side high school located on the corner of Cass and Knapp streets. De Gelleke studied under, and later formed a partnership with fellow architect H. J. Van Ryn. Together, they designed the Caswell Building, the Marine National Exchange Bank Building, the Straus Building, the Milwaukee University School building, Sabin Science Hall, Milwaukee-Downer College, the Milwaukee Central Vocational School, the Milwaukee Normal School, Riverside, Washington and Bay View high schools, as well as number of Milwaukee city grade schools. Gerrit and his brother Peter, also an architect, designed Milwaukee County General Hospital which operated from the 1920s through the 1980s. In 1953, Gerrit was awarded the Edward C. Kemper Award from the American Institute of Architects for his service as chairman of its finance committee. He passed away February 21, 1960.

This collection contains Gerrit J. De Gelleke’s personal financial records, including account books, a deposit book, property accounts, investment accounts and reports, as well as correspondence and notes dealing with his financial activity.
