Biography/History

The Saint Lawrence Seaway opened in June 1959, finally allowing ocean-going vessels to enter the Great Lakes, facilitating trade. Ten years later, various local corporations and bordering government municipalities expressed interest in recognizing the decade of joint United States/Canadian seaway operation, additionally hoping to generate publicity for the positive economic impacts of the seaway. A steering committee was formed called the Governor’s Committee, with representatives from all interested parties, to facilitate the tenth anniversary celebration. It’s central headquarters was operated out of the Great Lakes Commission office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains a wide array of records relating to the 10th anniversary celebration, including; city planning materials and minutes, program outlines, correspondence with the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society and the Milwaukee Public Library concerning the use of artifacts and material, participation schedules, promotional material and press kits, as well as photocopies of news clippings commemorating the observance.
