Biography/History
The Saint Lawrence Seaway opened in June 1959, finally allowing ocean-going vessels
to enter the Great Lakes, facilitating trade. Ten years later, various local
corporations and bordering government municipalities expressed interest in
recognizing the decade of joint United States/Canadian seaway operation,
additionally hoping to generate publicity for the positive economic impacts of the
seaway. A steering committee was formed called the Governor’s Committee, with
representatives from all interested parties, to facilitate the tenth anniversary
celebration. It’s central headquarters was operated out of the Great Lakes
Commission office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
