Biography/History

The Voice of Concerned Citizens, as well as the Citizens Regional Environmental Coalition, were both environmental organizations in the Milwaukee area which were concerned with the impact that further highway development, specifically the northern extension of the Stadium freeway, would have on both the environment and the community.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains official reports, correspondence, a membership list, and a copy of remarks made from the Voice of Concerned Citizens. The correspondence includes politicians such as Senator Gaylord Nelson and Mayor Henry Maier. There is also a small amount of material from a related organization, Citizens Regional Environmental Coalition, such as a flier advertising a political rally.

Relocation of residents affected by the planned highway expansion and environmental issues, such as recycling, are the focus of the collection. Most of the materials are from Norman and Frances Steeger, who were members of the Voice of Concerned Citizens and this collection demonstrates their efforts to protect the local environment.

Arrangement of the Materials

The collection is arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within each folder.
