Biography/History
The Grand Avenue Congregational Church was founded in 1847 after it split from the
from First Presbyterian and First Congregational Churches. It was originally called
the Free Congregational before it changed its name. The Church had interests in
abolition, temperance, and the education of women. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke
there in 1957. In its early years, the Church moved to different locations in
Milwaukee, and settled at its current location on Wisconsin Avenue (formerly Grand
Avenue) in 1887. The Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in
1986.
