Abstract:
Schomer Lichtner was an artist who worked in many media, including ink, paint, lithograph and sculpture. The works represented in this collection include themes of dancers, cows, leaves and flowers, and freehand organic patterns.

Biography/History

Schomer Lichtner (1905-2006), was born in Illinois but resided in Wisconsin much of his life. He studied in New York, Chicago and Milwaukee. Early in his career, he produced work for the Federal Works Progress Administration art program. He was married to artist Ruth Grotenrath (1912-1988) and taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In the later years of his life, Lichtner lived in Shorewood, Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this collection contains Lichtner's artwork. Themes include ballet/dance, fashion, female human figures, cows, birds, leaves/flowers, and freehand organic patterns. Some items in this collection were created for distribution to friends at neighborhood “picnics”, such as the Little Book Series. Other items were created in collaboration with Milwaukee area museums, and dance and theater companies, including exhibition programs, photographs, and advertisements.

Schomer Lichtner : a little selection of a visual artist's miscellanea

This is a book, the first one of a series mostly of drawings & prints, etc. Number 1

Schomer Lichtner created a “Read” poster for Milwaukee Public Library. Prints of this poster have been displayed at MPL Central Library and branches. Paintings by Lichtner and by Ruth Grotenrath are in the art collection at Central Library.
