Biography/History
The League of Women Voters (LWV) was founded in 1920 by Carrie Chapman Catt six
months before the passage of the 19th Amendment and the achievement of women’s
suffrage. The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin (LWVWI) was also founded in 1920.
The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County (LWVMC) was formed in 1989 by merging
the Wauwatosa, North Shore, and Milwaukee chapters/leagues. Catt was born in Ripon,
Wisconsin. Lucille R. Krug, wife of former City Librarian Richard E. Krug, was the
president of the Milwaukee Chapter from roughly 1947-1954.
