Biography/History

Leo Tiefenthaler was born in Milwaukee to Pancratius and Clara Tiefenthaler in 1880. Tiefenthaler taught elementary school for several years before earning his master's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin. He returned to Milwaukee in 1911 where he served as municipal reference librarian. Tiefenthaler became civic secretary of the City Club of Milwaukee in 1917, a post he held for over fifty years. The City Club was founded in 1908 to oversee local government. A believer in good government, Tiefenthaler attended various City and County meetings and was active in overseeing their budgets. He died in 1974.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains the papers of Leo Tiefenthaler. The bulk of the collection is comprised of personal materials, such as correspondence, postcards, and invitations from shortly before he moved back to Milwaukee, circa 1909-1910. There is also a folder of his writings and poetry that he would give to his staff while he was with the City Club, as well as notes from speeches he gave concerning various civic matters. Other items such as photographs, clippings, and various notes are included too.
