Biography/History

The Civic Music Association of Milwaukee was formed in 1918 by the Association’s first president Liborious Semmann, the Dean of the College of Music at Marquette University. In 1927, the Association organized the Young People’s Orchestra, which later came to be known as the Milwaukee Civic Symphony Orchestra, under Rudolph Kopp. The Young People’s Symphonic Band, which later came to be known as the Milwaukee Civic Concert Band, was organized in 1940 under Joseph Skornicka. In 1994, the Milwaukee Civic Symphony Orchestra incorporated as a separate non-profit organization and was renamed the Festival City Symphony Orchestra. The Association is still active in Milwaukee area, serving the five surrounding counties and continues to host events and present awards.
