Biography/History
The National Conference of Christians and Jews Inc. was founded in 1927 to promote
and facilitate understanding, respect, cooperation between religions on civic and
social justice issues through dialogue and education. In the 1990s the name was
changed to the National Conference for Community and Justice.
Note from front of the scrapbook: "During the year of 1949...The people of Milwaukee
demonstrated their faith in the individual and worked in the community for a broader
understanding of human rights. A partial story of their faith and effort is told in
the pages that follow..."
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains a single scrapbook. The scrapbook is vignettes of hand drawn
artwork, text, photographs, newspaper clippings also including correspondence and
documents from a variety of Milwaukee organizations. The themes of the vignettes are
titled: Housing; Community Service; Employment; Schools and Education; Brotherhood;
Community in Action. The title page lists the following acknowledgments: cover by
Ray Taylor; Layout and design by Al Schoenung, Bob Zieper; Make-up by Bob Landry,
Bob George. Most documents and correspondence are either to or from Maurice Terry,
Director of Wisconsin Region of the Conference of Christians and Jews Inc.
Correspondence and documents are dated from 1946-1949.

Item was part of the MPL’s circulating collection until at least 1987. It was
