Biography/History

Florence F. Lindemann was born in 1908. She was a widely published freelance writer who won many awards for her writing, including a Jade Ring for articles in 1973. Her articles, poems, and book reviews were published in many markets, including the Milwaukee Journal, Milwaukee Sentinel, Christian Science Monitor, Reader’s Digest, Lutheran Digest, and the Milwaukee Lutheran. Florence was instrumental in developing a variety of projects promoting the writing craft in Wisconsin. She was president of the National League of American Pen Women and the Altrusa Club, regional vice president of the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets, a member of the WWA Board of Directors, Wisconsin Press Women, the National Federation of Press Women, Women in Communication, and the ByLiners. She died in 1979.

Harvey John Lindemann was born in 1905 in Juneau, Wisconsin. Beginning in 1922, he worked for the Wisconsin Electric Power Company (WEPCO) after earning a degree in electrical engineering from Milwaukee Vocational Technical School. Lindemann retired in 1969. Harvey was a widely known local astronomer, speaker, and former president of the Milwaukee Astronomical Society. Florence and Harvey had two daughters. He died in 1980.

Scope and Content Note

The Florence Lindemann materials contain items on her writing and affiliations with numerous writing and civic groups. Included are correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, certificates of membership and achievement, and handwritten and typed drafts of articles and a proposed cooking book.

The Harvey Lindemann materials contain items relating to astronomy and his work with Wisconsin Electric Power Company. Included is an honorary plaque, correspondence, reel-to-reel audio tapes of lectures and radio interviews on astronomy subjects, as well as photographs and slides of WEPCO and astronomical events. There are also materials on the history of the Wisconsin Electric Power Company.

Acquisition Information

The collection was acquired after Florence’s death in a series of donations between the years 1979-1981. Initial donations came from her husband, Harvey Lindemann and then later their daughter, Karen Grampp. Materials were accessioned as Local History Manuscripts.
