Biography/History

Herbert Oswald Nicholas Kubly was born in New Glarus, Wisconsin in 1915. He graduated in 1937 from the University of Wisconsin with a journalism degree. He was a newspaper editor, journalist, and literary critic for several newspapers including the New York Herald Tribune. He was also a novelist, essayist, and playwright. He was the recipient of both Rockefeller and Fulbright grants. In 1956, Kubly won the National Book Award for Nonfiction for his first book, American in Italy. Kubly taught at the University of Illinois, San Francisco State University, and was writer-in-residence at University of Wisconsin-Parkside. He died in 1996.

Scope and Content Note

Collection consists of typed manuscripts of uncorrected proofs of novels The Anxious Hand, Easter in Sicily, The Whistling Zone, and Varieties of Love. The manuscripts of two nonfiction works, Italy and Switzerland are included as well. The author’s notes and corrections are present on some of the manuscripts. There is also correspondence, several newspaper clippings on the author, and reviews of his works.

The collection is arranged alphabetically, then chronologically within each folder.
